Born the 4th of October 1971, I graduated (Master level) in Architecture in 1996, with nine months at theInstitute d’Arts Visuels, Orleans (F). I got the position of Assistant Professor in 2001 and then enrolled in2006 as Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano where I regularly teach since 1999 in theCommunication Design program, both in the Bachelor and Master levels. In 2012 I’ve been elected Chair of both the B.Sc. and the M.Sc. programs in Communication Design with theresponsibility of making decisions on contents and professors; the mandate will end in December 2015.In 2014 I got the national qualification as Full Professor that allows me to be enrolled in that position.I’m co-editor of the “Big Data and Society” journal (SAGE) since 2014; I’ve been invited as visiting lecturer atUniversidad de Malaga (E), ENSCI Les Ateliers (F), Glasgow School of Art (UK), The Royal Institute of Art –School of Architecture (SW), the British Higher School of Art and Design in Moscow (RUS), the StanfordHumanities Centre (CA, U.S.) and the China Central Academy for Fine Arts (CAFA), Beijing – RPC.Member of the board at the Design PhD program (Politecnico di Milano) and chair of the PhD course“Public Engagement with Science and Technology”, my research activity focuses on the development oftools and methods for Data Visualization and Information Design to foster understanding and supportdecision-making processes in complex (social) systems/issues.In 2004 I initiated the DesignNet project at the Industrial Design Department, to develop tools and methodsfor information and knowledge management in design processes. The resulting web tools (Design Catalogue,Design Thesaurus and Design Directory) have been used and tested for several years within POLIteca, theDesign Knowledge Center at Politecnico di Milano I founded and where I had the position of ScientificDirector until 2011.Teaching since 2004 about Information Design and Data Visualization, in 2006 I founded theDensityDesign Research Lab – officially recognized as a departmental research lab in 2010 - where Icurrently hold the position of Scientific Director. The research activity of the lab focuses on the visualrepresentation of complex social, organizational and urban phenomena; it includes theoretical andepistemological reflections on visualizations and analyses of their cognitive underpinnings, in addition tothe development of large frameworks for data visualization and ad-hoc solutions for speculativeexplorations.
